Dr. Gary Hylander: The Doolittle Raid

Monday, June 177:00—8:15 PMSimoni RoomMorrill Memorial Library33 Walpole St., Norwood, MA, 02062

Popular historian Dr. Gary Hylander will give another historical lecture in his 2019 series. Planned by Admiral King and Lieutenant Colonel Doolittle, the bombing of Tokyo gave a tremendous boost to American morale after Pearl Harbor. In April 1942, the aircraft carrier hornet launched sixteen B-25 bombers against the Japanese capital. While the Doolittle raid did little military damage, it stunned Japanese military strategists. As a result of the raid, Japanese military leaders planned to establish a broad defensive perimeter in the western Pacific to prevent future American air attacks against the Japanese home islands.
