Eating Seasonally in New England

Tuesday, November 286:30—7:30 PMSimoni RoomMorrill Memorial Library33 Walpole St., Norwood, MA, 02062

As part of their Local Food Program, the Sustainable Business Network of Massachusetts is partnering with the Morrill Memorial Library to talk about what it means to eat seasonally in New England with Local Food Program Manager Kerry Kokkinogenis on Tuesday, November 28 at 6:30pm in the Simoni Room.

Most cultures have ideas about which foods should be eaten during certain seasons, even if those seasons differ widely (wet or dry, versus cold or hot). Many people also believe that eating seasonally is rooted both in ideas of eating healthily, and eating locally. Here in New England we have an abundance of locally-grown, -harvested, and -caught foods that can make winter dinners tastier, more nutritious, and appealing to many palates. At tonight's program, we will talk about what is in season and the ways some farmers extend the growing season. Everyone will leave with a handful of local, seasonal recipes that will satisfy many different eaters.

About our presenter: Since graduating with a M.A. in Health Communication in 2008, Kerry Kokkinogenis has sought to address health disparities in a variety of ways, studying and addressing the bigger-picture factors that impact health and wellness, including food, strong local communities, and economic opportunities. In 2016, Kerry opened a local-focused, brick-and-mortar food store selling only food grown or produced in the Northeast Region, and more recently, pivoted to a farm-to-home delivery model. Since joining the SBN team in April 2023, Kerry has enjoyed employing the skills and experiences gained in those varied endeavors to support local food systems.

About SBN: The Sustainable Business Network's Boston Local Food Program has been dedicated to nurturing the growth of New England's agricultural and food industry, ensuring that the benefits of local, healthy food are accessible to everyone in our diverse community. Our mission is to support the growth of local food producers, farmers, and entrepreneurs while ensuring equal access to nutritious food for communities of all backgrounds.
