Knowing How to Discuss Race: Beginning Your Racial Literacy Journey

Tuesday, May 257:00—8:30 PMVirtualMorrill Memorial Library33 Walpole St., Norwood, MA, 02062

The Morrill Memorial Library and Progress Norwood are proud to partner with New England-based Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI) firm, letsSTARTtogether, to bring a racial literacy discussion series to the Norwood community. The series, “Knowing How to Discuss Race: Beginning Your Racial Literacy Journey,” will meet virtually on five Tuesdays from May 18 - June 15 at 7:00 pm.

Facilitated by Ashlee Jeannot, founder of letsSTARTtogether, and consultant Daniela Pozos Nicolau, this course will prepare members to become racially literate and work towards racial justice and equity. This series will follow critical race theories, racial equity, and feminist theories. By the end of the series participants will emerge with an increased sense of self-awareness as well as knowledge and skills to immediately apply in their personal and professional lives. We will do this work by being in conversation with a range of texts and genres (for instance, film, essays and podcasts) that engage broadly with race, white supremacy, patriarchy, environmental terrorism, and feminist knowledge. The meta-project of this undertaking will be to study how we are involved in our community, our proximity to privilege and how to leverage that for change.

Registration is required and space is limited; registration closes on Friday, May 7. Please plan to attend every meeting as each session builds on the last. All materials will be provided for this Zoom-based discussion series. Please sign up on the library’s events calendar, norwoodlibrary.org/morrillcalendar, and call the Reference Desk with any questions: 781-769-0200 x2.

This discussion series is part of Norwood’s Civic Hub, a year-long series of LSTA grant programs brought to you with federal funds provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and administered by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.

Registration for this event has now closed.
